Have A Project That Requires Rendering & Insulation?

What Are The Different Types Of External Wall Insulation?

Does your home currently have cavity wall insulation but you are looking for something that further improves the energy efficiency of your home? Maybe you live in a solid wall property? Do you want to know the different types of external wall insulation?

There are typically four EWI external wall insulation systems and each provides a variety of benefits and project applications that perform slightly differently.

Our external wall insulation specialists are always available to help and can suggest the best solution for your home.

Rockwool

The leading solution is rockwool mineral wool. Rockwool is made of natural fibers of volcanic rock and other sustainable materials that do not deteriorate over time and has a number of added characteristics that make it an exceptional material for external wall insulation.

Rockwool mineral wool insulation is non-combustible and fire resistant to a melting temperature of over 1,000 degrees making it superior to other materials and vastly improving the fire safety and resilience of your home.

Other benefits are it’s excellent long-term performance (does not degrade or lose it’s effectiveness over time), sound-proofing qualities, incredible compressive strength, highly water-repellent and breathable, sustainable and environmentally friendly, and mostly it’s superior ability to retain heat incredibly well (preventing your home from losing or gaining heat through its walls and roof).

Less energy is required to heat up or cool down the building – making subsequent energy bills lower in cost.

Kingspan Kooltherm K5

Kingspan Kooltherm K5 is also an advanced external wall insulation board for brick, stone or block walls with a fibre-free rigid thermoset phenolic core. K5 is the thinnest insulation solution available and maintains extra internal space within your home or commercial building.

Kingspan Kooltherm K5 is a fantastic solution for properties that cannot be insulated from the inside and it’s lightweight properties make it easy to transport and install externally without disturbing the inside of existing buildings.

Kingspan Kooltherm K5 key feature is that it is great for saving space and this insulation board is ideal for projects where extra space is at a premium. You can use less of this type of insulation material (phenolic resin) to achieve the required U-value. Kingspan’s environmental impact is also extremely low and boasts an ozone depleting potential of zero.

Expanded Polystyrene (EPS)

Expanded polystyrene insulation (“EPS”) is an industry-leading external wall insulation that offers incredible value for money whilst providing superb thermal performance. This external wall insulation system is incredibly lightweight — manufactured using beads of foam — making the installation to some degree more cost-effective compared to that of Rockwool or Kingspan K5.

EPS can be installed onto brick, stone, block, or timber-backed walls using special adhesive and mechanical fixings, and can also be positioned inside the cavity void if your home is to be insulated using traditional cavity wall insulation.

Extruded Polystyrene (XPS)

Extruded polystyrene insulation (“XPS”) is a high-density board created using a manufacturing process of extrusion. This process results in a compacted closed cell structure that reduces the risk of water penetration. XPS is used as a structural insulant and is available in various thicknesses for project applications that require resistance against excess moisture levels.
